BIOGRAPHY

From dance music to rock and back to dance music again, from bedroom wannabe DJ to first proper gig alongside Dave The Drummer and the other Liberator DJ’s, his love of music has taken towards his new career as Smut the DJ.

Some 8 years later, guitarist, DJ and now producer, Martin has played on some of Europe’s most famous stages with a huge array of star DJ’s. His career has taken him from playing in the underground scene to running his own club-night in London. He has combined his long-time love of music and dancing to give a natural feel for what the dance-floor needs, borne out of the success of his club-night, ‘Loop’ and his continued return to Europe’s best night, We Love at Space in Ibiza.

Having ticked quite a few personal boxes in the London underground dance scene, Martin has now turned his focus to a more club based DJ career and to music production. The record label Loop Recordings was launched at the 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami, in collaboration with We Love residents Jem Haynes and Ian C.

The journey from Margate to Miami has taken Martin’s dance music from soul to motown, through northern soul and disco to today’s techno and house variations. ‘I’ve been hooked by dancing and dance music all my life. I make and buy the sort of tunes that make me dance and give me energy, from those, I play the tunes that I think the dance-floor needs’. He will occasionally be heard playing a swing set, or if it’s that sort of time, then maybe some psychedelic trance.

A regular for the past 4 years for the We Love night, Martin is also on rotation at London’s best un-advertised party, Planet Angel. He has played in several other countries in clubs and at festivals, including Glastonbury, but it is the underground scene of warehouse-parties and squats that have mostly taken Martin the length and breadth of the UK.

Martin has shared the stage with many of the world’s star DJ’s from Astrix to Zabelia, from Groove Armada to Jeff Mills. He has come a long way in a short time but enjoying the journey has been key. For Martin, the best so far was the famous Sunset Terrace at Space for We Love, back-to-back with Jem Haynes, with live percussion from Ian C, his 2 Loop Recordings partners.

Although music is Martin’s main interest he still has several other aspects to his busy life. In the winter a qualified ski instructor and an occasional snow-boarder, in the summer both triathlon and driving or engineering the racing car he shares with his 2 sons. To others this might seem busy but to Martin, having competed in hundreds of motor races, marathons, ultra-marathons and triathlons, plus wakeboarding, barefoot skiing, scuba-diving, sailing, cricket, hockey etc etc, it’s the recipe for an interesting life.

Martin lives in Faversham, Kent, with his wife Carine and their dog, Jake. At their home he constructed a recording studio in the basement, now labelled by Jem Haynes, ‘The Rave Cave’, where the floor, walls and ceiling all painted as a surrounding mural thus forming a magical space for the creation of music, where virtually all the Loop Recordings music has been made.

And what’s next on the agenda for the DJ called Smut? ‘Who knows’, said Martin, ‘let’s get back on the ride and see’...
