Top 5 2011 We Love Podcasts

Monday, December 19th, 2011

Sorry, we just couldn’t resist. Since everyone and their dog seems to be doing end of year lists here’s our top 5 We Love podcasts produced with the capable hands (and voice) of Andy Wilson. There’s also our top 5 behind the scenes type photos from Frank. Drum roll please…

At 5 it’s our closing party special. Plenty of bang for your buck here with 2 live sets and 2 live PAs from our Terraces. Rob Da Bank is in conversation and Adamski performs his classic ‘Killer’.

Can you at least get me backstage! Leaves us wondering what more than backstage would mean.

At number 4 it’s a personal fave from We Love HQ, Kompakt’s takeover where Superpitcher provides his 4 favourite tracks and chats about alfresco voodoo.

Rafter party

There’s a nice cross-section of the ethos of We Love at 3, with veteran Hell, and young guns jozif and Foamo. jozif tells us why he wants to be Paul Woolford and why he’s rolling with the sheep.

Careful inspection of Mezcal worms, before careless consumption.

Mat Playford talks about his debut album at number 2 and there’s sets from the club featuring likely lads PBR Streetgang and golden boy Joris Voorn.

Protip: Wearing a pretty dress and a winning smile will get you one more tune.

Our favourite podcast is Paul Woolford’s where he talks about hooking into Detroit, his famous Terrace edits and return of his alter-ego Bobby Peru.

The security guard literally jumping for joy to see the back of us... until next year!

We Love The Warehouse Project

Friday, September 30th, 2011

After a few years absence from the Manchester party circuit we are very pleased to be back at The Warehouse Project hosting something of an Ibiza closing party. For this special event we have invited some of our favourite acts from this Summer’s Space residents and guests.

Now in his tenth year as a We Love… resident, technical maestro James Zabiela headlines the event. Joining him is the true godfather of techno Derrick May. Nic Fanciuli makes a welcome return to the We Love fold and is joined by Ralph Lawson’s full live band 2020Soundsystem. Next up we have Geddes and newly initiated We Love resident jozif. Completing the line up Jem Haynes and Mat Playford bring the sounds of the Space Discoteca and Terrace respectively to the Picadilly car park.

Tickets here.

In the 103 we’re very please to welcome Leeds lads PBR Streetgang and Huddersfield’s finest Jamie Fatneck. Also appearing are tech-house upstarts Prince Club.

We Love Recordings – Portraits 01/ Mat Playford previews

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

“The early synth artists Jean Michelle Jar, Giorgio Moroder, Herbie Hancock and Paul Hardcastle have shaped me – they have so much more feeling and harmonics. The main basis of my sound in the studio is inspired by 80s synths. I have owned over 30 in my time and I’ve had this obsession really since I was around 5 years old. I think stuff like this runs real deep into your system. They say you don’t have a conscious mind until you’re 7 years of age and up until that point your subconscious is just a sponge sucking up information and influences around you. When I was very young two of my uncles owned crazy keyboards. Also a huge influence was my mother’s dance studio in the early 80s where I actually played the music, both vinyl and tape, in her aerobics classes.” – Mat Playford

We Love Recordings is shortly launching the Artist Portrait album series with the aim of exhibiting the musical innovation and diversity of We Love’s artists and provide the listener with something more considered that an average compilation mix album. Things are kicking off with Mat Playford – a seasoned producer and long term associate known for an old school approach to production, his fervent skill, and a deep love of all things analogue. We’re naturally wary of saying too much but we are genuinely delighted to be working with and releasing the music of an artist we can believe in and hopefully the previews below can give you an idea and help you make up your own minds. We’re confident the result is an elegant blend, rich in musicality that will stand the test of time. The album is released on July 1st, 2011. Full track-list below. Enjoy…

Mat Playford – Can’t Reach [Clip] by welove
With a rising tempo and melancholic but typically powerful vocal performance from Danielle Moore of Crazy P this is modern electronica with an perceptible pop sensibility. This track goes some way to proving this ‘digital-disco’ direction can be both accessible to new ears and pleasurable for aficionados alike.

Mat Playford – Evidence [Clip] by welove
It’s unusual for a song to have both such a cinematic feel but still feel like it could belong in the warm up or wind down from many a balearic moment. No vocal but plenty strength of feeling.

Mat Playford – Pretty Thing [Clip] by welove
Probably the most hummed track of recent weeks in the We Love office in Ibiza. The kind of thing to listen to in a Ferrari Testarossa while speeding down la carretera a Salinas. Already pencilled in by a few key heads as a “tune-to-watch” for the summer ahead.

Mat Playford – Transmoog [Clip] by welove
A free flowing synth excursion, with a beat to drive and keep the interest as Playford’s virtuous skill on the ivories come to the fore. Quite a good contender as a last track for the likes of Garnier, Zabiela, Voorn etc.

We Love… SW4

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

We’re very happy to announce the lineup for our arena at SW4 on Sunday 28th August in London’s Clapham Common.

Headlining the arena, Sasha makes a welcome return to the We Love fold. One of the undisputed kings of dance music, Sasha returns to SW4 having smashed last year’s Main Stage to pieces. He will be joined by Terrace icon Steve Lawler. A We Love party wouldn’t be complete without our residents Simian Mobile Disco and Joris Voorn. Simian make their long awaited SW4 debut this year, whilst Joris returns to the Common having played a storming set in John Digweed’s Bedrock arena in 2010. Completing the line-up we welcome Berlin’s Bpitch Control label boss Ellen Allien for her SW4 debut, alongside We Love favourites Technasia and Mat Playford.

Made to Play’s Jesse Rose.

This years opening party is set to define the Ibiza season as We Love… Space celebrate the seminal 20 Years of Planet E. Few labels have managed to stand the test of time and if they have, few can claim to be as relevant and influential as they were twenty years back. Planet E hasn’t just survived the last twenty years but positively revelled in it. Detroit techno mastermind Carl Craig will be joined by Derrick May and Paul Woolford, who have both recently presented the label with blistering releases. These masterminds will be joined by We Love weekly resident Jem Haynes to take control of the Discoteca for a rare and prestigious vinyl-only session in celebration of the label.

Meanwhile, the world famous Space Terraza plays host to James Zabiela showcasing his house sound for 2011. The Hot Chip DJs, Felix Martin and Al Doyle return for the first of their three date exclusive residency and Radio 1 current “In New DJs We Trust” favourite Heidi bringing the jackin’ sound’ o’ Chi’ Town with support from Made To Play’s Jesse Rose. Kicking off proceedings is We Love’s own Mat Playford playing a three hour live show using a customised analogue setup.

2011 brings new faces to share this summer’s series of events. Jaymo & Andy George’s label Moda host the Sunset Terrace before Mr Doris’ “Afterdark” project takes over after midnight. Ryan O’Gorman returns with The Burlington Project to host twelve intimate dates in the Redbox, the room for clued up locals and holiday-makers alike.

See you on the dancefloor! Tickets available from Space Ibiza, Ibiza Spotlight and Club Tickets.

We Love… New Year’s Celebrations

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Traditionally New Year’s Eve serves as a time for reflecting on the year gone by, but also as a chance to look ahead at what’s yet to come. For We Love… this sentiment could not be more true. With a double header of parties over the Hogmanay weekend, in Leeds on New Year’s Eve and London on New Year’s Day, we have invited some of our favourite guests from the summer parties here in Ibiza to kick start our winter activities.

We Love... Leeds

We Love... Leeds

For New Year’s Eve we have teamed up with local party starters Asylum and BacktoBasics for some acid house festivities at Stinky’s Peep House. Headlining the event the Radio One’ “in new djs we trust” and Get Physical heroine Heidi will be bringing her Terrace sounds to the slightly less Balearic vibes of the West Yorkshire Pennines. Having wowed us at Space this summer it’s a pleasure to bring Heidi to this overseas event. Let’s see how her sound translates from the hallowed Space Terraza to the infamous Basics basement. The rest of the main room’s activities will be overseen by We Love… resident Jem Haynes who can’t celebrate too hard as it’s off down to London the day after where he’s bringing his label Loop Recordings to the Ministry of Sound second room. Adding the Basics touch, Buckley will be making his return to the We Love… fold after a 3 year hiatus.

The middle floor of Stinky’s will be taken over by Local lads Burnski, Tristan Da Chuna, James Holroyd Jon Woodall and Frenchy who have proven themselves countless times and are sure to celebrate in style.

Orchestrating proceedings will be PBR Streetgang; having slipped so gracefully into their role as Terrace residents this summer, it is only thanks to their help that we can put this party together. Asylum has been a Leeds institution for over seven years and we cant think of a nicer set of folk to bring in the new year with. Joining PBR Streetgang in the top room will be disco boogie doyen Greg Wilson, something not to be missed. And we are now pleased to announce the special late addition of Kitchen Sink Disco king Jamie Fatneck.

Then its off to bed, or perhaps not, before jumping on the train, plane or automobile and heading down to London and the Ministry of Sound.

We Love... London

We Love... London

If we are to believe the Mayans, then come New Year’s day we only have one year left to live. What better way to start the year then, than with three of our standout summer residents stacking up in the Ministry Of Sound main room? James Zabiela, Simian Mobile Disco and Joris Voorn have all excelled on the Terrace and in the Discoteca this summer but this is the first time we’ve managed to get them all playing in the same room. Expect a masterclass in house, techno and technical wizardry.

The 103 bar plays host to We Love residents Mat Playford and Jem Haynes along with his Loop Recordings partners Ian C and Martin ‘Smut‘ Wood. Over the summer Mat and Jem went beyond the call of duty at our summer home Space and away on our international events, proving why they are the most in-demand touring residents on the We Love roster. Jem’s closing Terrace set on the night of Spain’s World Cup victory was one of our summer highlights and Mat’s impromptu warm up for Groove Armada at Ministry impressed so much he’s been called back for each and every tour since. This will also serve as a jumping off point for the infant Loop Recordings, the brain child of Jem, Ian and Martin. Having introduced their label to Ibiza on the Sunset Terrace this summer where all three performed side by side, it’s now time for London to see what they have to offer.

A Summer In The Life, 2010 – Andrew Livesey #8

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

And they say nurses have it bad… This summer our roving brand evangelist Andrew Livesey took to the skies taking the We Love… party with him. Taking in London, Montenegro, Croatia and parts of the world only accessible by boat, the summer series of We Love tours featured standout performances from Groove Armada, DJ Hell, 2020Soundsystem, Ewan Pearson, Todd Terje and Lottie to name only a few. A special mention must go to Mat Playford and Jem Haynes who fulfilled their role as touring residents spectacularly. Along the way Andrew managed to break himself away from sampling the local cuisines for long enough to take a few photos of what was going on.

We Love... Montenegro

After the success of last month’s Party where Jem Haynes stepped up and took the place of a certain missing DJ, this time we return with We Love… resident Mat Playford fresh of the back of smashing the main room at out recent We Love… Ministry Of Sound party in London. Joining Mat we have the very special guest Lottie who will bring her own unique mix of glam and quality to the Top Hill club.
