It’s time to welcome the turning of the Mayan Long Count calendar. With that in mind we’ve lined up two showcases of the best of We Love on both sides of the border. First up is one of the biggest annual party’s in Scotland, Hogmanay in Edinburgh where the whole centre of town is taken over for a street party. Things will be warmer in the Liquid Room where Julio Bashmore, jozif, Deetron and a host of local residents are set to welcome in the bells with style. You’ll find tickets, here.
Check out this video made by the capable hands of Jocie Cox featuring jozif and the story behind his summer residency on the We Love Space terrace.
Next up we’re jumping on the east coast main line down to join a host of We Love stalwarts at our London home, Ministry of Sound. The lineup is huge by anyone’s standards with a host of our headline summer residents all together under one roof. There’s a rare UK appearance from Groove Armada and we’re welcoming back Simian Mobile Disco and Joris Voorn after stellar sets at our last New Year show (hard to believe that was almost a year ago!).
Check out our latest radio show with an exclusive live mix from Groove Armada on the Space Terraza recorded during the summer.
The resident theme continues into the smaller but perfectly formed 103 room. Disco-house doyens PBR Streetgang are joined by Jem Haynes and Ian Blevins for what will be the debut of their Second Line project.
Collectively Jem Haynes and Ian Blevins DJ’d for well over 100 hours at Space this Summer. Each is a weekly resident for We Love and in one form or another they have played in all six of Space’s rooms. A high pedigree by anyone’s standards. Although the pair have been friends for a long time, it is only in the last 6 months that they have started working together. Their Second Line project as it stands is production partnership with a live show well on it’s way. Their first EP released on Jem’s own Colour Series label takes inspiration from the sounds and feelings of a New Orleans Second Line; think dance-floor orientated house music with a jazz twist.
Over the summer the pair spent most of their time locked in their Ibiza town studio or testing out their fledgling productions on the crowds at Space . Big Chief and B Flat proved to be hits in both the Discoteca and Terrace alike and the Balearic tinge they have given to Radiohead’s Codex worked perfectly in the smaller rooms.
Jem and Ian are gigging separately throughout the summer around the world but the premier performance as Second Line is taking place at a We Love… event in London early next year. More to follow on that news shortly ;-) For more info on Second Line check out their Facebook, Sound Cloud and record label.
After a few years absence from the Manchester party circuit we are very pleased to be back at The Warehouse Project hosting something of an Ibiza closing party. For this special event we have invited some of our favourite acts from this Summer’s Space residents and guests.
Now in his tenth year as a We Love… resident, technical maestro James Zabiela headlines the event. Joining him is the true godfather of techno Derrick May. Nic Fanciuli makes a welcome return to the We Love fold and is joined by Ralph Lawson’s full live band 2020Soundsystem. Next up we have Geddes and newly initiated We Love resident jozif. Completing the line up Jem Haynes and Mat Playford bring the sounds of the Space Discoteca and Terrace respectively to the Picadilly car park.
Since securing his place as one of the most most valued members of the eclectic set in Ibiza, young Blevins continues apace with his production work now at the forefront of his mind. The mix below consists of a blend between his own material and collaborations, including his New Orleans inspired project with fellow We Love resident Jem Haynes the double-entendre inducing, Second Line. Check out more from Ian Blevins on Soundcloud.

Made to Play’s Jesse Rose.
We are delighted to announce the lineup for our opening party, We Love… Space on Sunday June 12th 2011. We Love is unique in Ibiza with 6 rooms of unbridled musical excursions. Follow the linked names for videos, mixes and more.
This years opening party is set to define the Ibiza season as We Love… Space celebrate the seminal 20 Years of Planet E. Few labels have managed to stand the test of time and if they have, few can claim to be as relevant and influential as they were twenty years back. Planet E hasn’t just survived the last twenty years but positively revelled in it. Detroit techno mastermind Carl Craig will be joined by Derrick May and Paul Woolford, who have both recently presented the label with blistering releases. These masterminds will be joined by We Love weekly resident Jem Haynes to take control of the Discoteca for a rare and prestigious vinyl-only session in celebration of the label.
Meanwhile, the world famous Space Terraza plays host to James Zabiela showcasing his house sound for 2011. The Hot Chip DJs, Felix Martin and Al Doyle return for the first of their three date exclusive residency and Radio 1 current “In New DJs We Trust” favourite Heidi bringing the jackin’ sound’ o’ Chi’ Town with support from Made To Play’s Jesse Rose. Kicking off proceedings is We Love’s own Mat Playford playing a three hour live show using a customised analogue setup.
2011 brings new faces to share this summer’s series of events. Jaymo & Andy George’s label Moda host the Sunset Terrace before Mr Doris’ “Afterdark” project takes over after midnight. Ryan O’Gorman returns with The Burlington Project to host twelve intimate dates in the Redbox, the room for clued up locals and holiday-makers alike.
Next up in our series to track the movements and latest musical leanings of our summer residents in our interview and mix combination creatively titled “Where are you now…”. Ahead of his appearance in our New Year double-header the man with the most risque press shots in dance music, Jem Haynes, brought his A-game to the table during the summer, opening up the Discoteca for the likes of Ivan Smagghe, Simian Mobile Disco, Joris Voorn and Carl Craig. Not only did he carry off the tricky art of balancing energy and restraint in warming the main room, he also brought his house sounds to both terraces including a spectacular morning closing La Terraza on the night of Spain’s world cup victory. There was also time to tear up the Red Box too. He’s an uncanny ability to combine moods and genres within a single set while reading the crowd that gives his sound a uniquely club orientated edge. Give the mix a listen and you’ll see what we mean. It’s a fine assemblage of beats, loops, breaks and you can download it in hight quality MP3 from his profile page.
So while you listen… Jem Haynes, where are you now?
You spent the summer either lolling around in the sun or playing music for thousands at Space, now you seem to be spending a lot of time in what you refer to as the “rave cave”. Is this your form of hibernation?
Hibernation or studio rehabilitation whatever you want to call it! The Rave Cave is where I produce and engineer all the music for our label Loop Recordings. It’s situated in the basement of Martin’s house and has a great vibe to it. The room has been decked out with some brilliant early 90s (rave flyer) style paintings on the walls as well as being equipped with pretty much everything we need to have a good time down there! I didn’t have a studio space in Ibiza so I used to sit in the sun with my laptop and headphones on and put down ideas after I had played at the club on Sundays. That’s usually the time when I have new ideas about beats, bass lines, melodies or edits of tracks that go down really well at the club. I would come back into the villa and someone would always say “Jem’s brown..” after sitting in the sun working on tracks for ages, so I started using that as my alias for the cheeky edits I do. A couple of them are sandwiched in this mix I did with the new Traktor S4 controller, which is a great new piece of equipment that enables you to play lots of loops, trigger samples as well as playing some strange pads and whooshes along the way! This is pretty much the start of a live setup which I’m keen to expand on next year, adding Ian and Martin into the mix.
Cave of rave
You’ve been using the aforementioned rave cave to produce tracks for your new label which you are running with Ian C and Martin ‘Smut’ Wood. How is that dynamic working out for you?
It’s working really well, surprisingly! I am the Loop Recordings studio engineer and produce tracks with Martin and Ian, as well as producing my own tracks. Ian is the resident drummer / internet tech dude and Martin plays guitar and DJs as well. We all performed together for the first time on the Sunset Terrace last summer, with myself and martin on four decks and FX and Ian on his Roland V drums and percussion. We had so much fun and a got a great crowd response, so I wanted to take it a step further and create a live show making the most of our different musical abilities. It is a work in progress so watch this space.
Mug loop
On tour with We Love you’ve had the chance to take in some pretty far flung places, what really happened in Montenegro?
Im ashamed to say nothing too rock n’ roll! We didn’t even drink a bottle of vodka between us. Myself and Andrew were absolutely blown away by the venue which overlooks the whole city of Montenegro and holds 2500 people on a tuesday night. Add to that some very expensive lights and lasers, some bikini clad girls dancing in a spa pool and a few dodgy looking eastern european soldier types lurking in the vip area… I think we probably made the right decision!
Traditionally New Year’s Eve serves as a time for reflecting on the year gone by, but also as a chance to look ahead at what’s yet to come. For We Love… this sentiment could not be more true. With a double header of parties over the Hogmanay weekend, in Leeds on New Year’s Eve and London on New Year’s Day, we have invited some of our favourite guests from the summer parties here in Ibiza to kick start our winter activities.
We Love... Leeds
For New Year’s Eve we have teamed up with local party starters Asylum and BacktoBasics for some acid house festivities at Stinky’s Peep House. Headlining the event the Radio One’ “in new djs we trust” and Get Physical heroine Heidi will be bringing her Terrace sounds to the slightly less Balearic vibes of the West Yorkshire Pennines. Having wowed us at Space this summer it’s a pleasure to bring Heidi to this overseas event. Let’s see how her sound translates from the hallowed Space Terraza to the infamous Basics basement. The rest of the main room’s activities will be overseen by We Love… resident Jem Haynes who can’t celebrate too hard as it’s off down to London the day after where he’s bringing his label Loop Recordings to the Ministry of Sound second room. Adding the Basics touch, Buckley will be making his return to the We Love… fold after a 3 year hiatus.
The middle floor of Stinky’s will be taken over by Local lads Burnski, Tristan Da Chuna, James Holroyd Jon Woodall and Frenchy who have proven themselves countless times and are sure to celebrate in style.
Orchestrating proceedings will be PBR Streetgang; having slipped so gracefully into their role as Terrace residents this summer, it is only thanks to their help that we can put this party together. Asylum has been a Leeds institution for over seven years and we cant think of a nicer set of folk to bring in the new year with. Joining PBR Streetgang in the top room will be disco boogie doyen Greg Wilson, something not to be missed. And we are now pleased to announce the special late addition of Kitchen Sink Disco king Jamie Fatneck.
Then its off to bed, or perhaps not, before jumping on the train, plane or automobile and heading down to London and the Ministry of Sound.
We Love... London
If we are to believe the Mayans, then come New Year’s day we only have one year left to live. What better way to start the year then, than with three of our standout summer residents stacking up in the Ministry Of Sound main room? James Zabiela,Simian Mobile Disco and Joris Voorn have all excelled on the Terrace and in the Discoteca this summer but this is the first time we’ve managed to get them all playing in the same room. Expect a masterclass in house, techno and technical wizardry.
The 103 bar plays host to We Love residents Mat Playford and Jem Haynes along with his Loop Recordings partners Ian C and Martin ‘Smut‘ Wood. Over the summer Mat and Jem went beyond the call of duty at our summer home Space and away on our international events, proving why they are the most in-demand touring residents on the We Love roster. Jem’s closing Terrace set on the night of Spain’s World Cup victory was one of our summer highlights and Mat’s impromptu warm up for Groove Armada at Ministry impressed so much he’s been called back for each and every tour since. This will also serve as a jumping off point for the infant Loop Recordings, the brain child of Jem, Ian and Martin. Having introduced their label to Ibiza on the Sunset Terrace this summer where all three performed side by side, it’s now time for London to see what they have to offer.
And they say nurses have it bad… This summer our roving brand evangelist Andrew Livesey took to the skies taking the We Love… party with him. Taking in London, Montenegro, Croatia and parts of the world only accessible by boat, the summer series of We Love tours featured standout performances from Groove Armada, DJ Hell, 2020Soundsystem, Ewan Pearson, Todd Terje and Lottie to name only a few. A special mention must go to Mat Playford and Jem Haynes who fulfilled their role as touring residents spectacularly. Along the way Andrew managed to break himself away from sampling the local cuisines for long enough to take a few photos of what was going on.
In and out of the mayhem that is Ibiza, two We Love… Space residents have been preparing for a winter musical onslaught. There has been a lot more going on than ‘just’ performing at what they consider to be the best party in the world.
The story started with Ian.C being invited by Martin ‘Smut’ Wood (also a We Love regular guest) and Jem Haynes to “come and have a jam in the rave cave with us”. Tracks were already in progress and a new label Loop Recordings was in its embryonic stage. The rave cave turned out to be a very nicely equipped studio in the countryside of south east England and with no outside distractions (or windows) to stop them, a series of many long, experimental and purposeful sessions ensued. Eight months later a bold new label is on the verge of being launched.
“All three of us bring something different to the table both live and in the studio. Martin plays guitar, Ian the drums and I am from a DJ and producing background,” says Jem. With that broad scope in mind, Loop Recordings makes total sense and actually came together pretty quickly. “We have the first 6 releases scheduled, (many of them road tested on the hallowed We Love dance floors by Jem) the first of which ‘Baby Come Back’ will be released in October after the We Love summer madness has ended.” To celebrate the end of “phase one”, Jem Haynes Sunset Terrace performance on the 12th of September will be joined by Ian.C before he performs with Alfredo. “We have all put in a great deal of effort and had a lot of fun creating the Loop sound”, says Smut, “it’s fantastic that new label tracks can be tested somewhere as special as We Love.”
