dub Magazine

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

The throwaway free mag scene is hugely over-populated in Ibiza with a higher advertorial to article ratio than a Sunday Mail supplement. There is one publication opposing the trend of flunky journalism and that is dub curated by our own in-house photographer Phrank and his partner in crime Andreas Simon. You’ll find insight beyond the usual night life sycophancy with a healthy dose of cynicism thrown in for good measure.

It’s by no means pompous however, and also serves as an outlet for Phrank’s photography work which stretches far outside his bread and butter made in the confines of the island’s superclubs.

A favourite section among the Ibiza locals is dub’s own version of the standard society pages. This painstakingly produced collage of movers, shakers, visitors and taste makers is inspected as soon as the magazine hits the streets to see which of the island’s scenesters have made the grade that month. You can be haughtily assured that most if not all of the team at We Love, from PR staff to resident DJs have appeared here on occasion

Alongside the lavish photography, editor Andreas Simon ensures a philosophical and inclusive outlook to the interviews, articles and poetry which makes up the bulk of the publication’s content. Every article (except the poetry) is published in English and Spanish with subjects chosen to capture a range of island life and opinion. You’ll find interviews with everyone from visiting superstars such as Derrick May and Ricardo Villalobos to uniquely Ibicenco socialite characters. Alongside this, Andreas’ own editorials are always on point and pull no punches with subjects ranging from music and drugs to critiques of the (mis)management of the island’s largest institutions.

The magazine survives on sponsorship from local businesses and promotors (the likes of We Love and Cocoon being long-term supporters). Ibiza is a unique territory in terms of publishing with a readership looking for specific insider information on everything from a party calendar to cheap eats. There are countless rags doing just that, but dub stands alone in offering alternatives, and on an island sometimes accused of being homogenous and inward looking – this can only be a good thing.

dub is published monthly with a circulation of 20,000 in Ibiza and selected outlets Europe-wide throughout summer. It’s fast becoming a collectors item and fortunately for those not visiting or dwelling in Ibiza they have an online presence where you can download in PDF format. The last two editions are here and here (right click and save as).

PBR Streetgang – Free Track Download & Summer Mix

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

As music lovers from Yorkshire who have a penchant for the Space terrace and all things balearic, you’d be hard pushed to find two lads who personify We Love Space through the summer of 2011 more than the PBR Streetgang. Ever affable but always on point, they’ve decided to give away a mix comprising completely of their own tracks and remixes. With any less talented duo this may seem a tall order, but rest assured this one will play well at home, in your car, or more suitably through your iPod on the flight from Leeds/Bradford airport to Ibiza this Sunday September 18th where the boys will be joined by the likes of Groove Armada, Tensnake and Ralph Lawson on la Terraza, tickets (for the club not the plane) here.

As if that weren’t enough, being the re-edit masters (before it was hip) they are, they’ve made an exclusive edit just for us which you can stream/download below. Jump aboard the boogie boat which is, the PBR Streetgang.

We Love Francesco Tristano & Carl Craig

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

We’re never shy of taking a risk here at We Love, bringing a concert pianist and a grand piano into one of the world’s temples of dance music could certainly be considered so. It’s never entirely surprising when two avant-garde musicians come together from across musical divides, but in Ibiza it’s not so commonplace.

Take one part Detroit techno legend, add a bit of Juilliard trained classical protegé, a piano imported from Valencia and a few thousand cosmopolitan clubbers in Ibiza and check out the results below. Carl Craig and Francesco Tristano will be joined this Sunday September 18th in the Discoteca by our Kompakt brethren Ewan Pearson and Michael Meyer, check the event page for full lineup, TICKETS HERE.

WE LOVE CLOSING FIESTA EXTRAVAGANZA

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

Endings can be bitter-sweet but it’s a blockbuster day of the highest order for the closing party on September 25th. It’s down to heavy hitters Fatboy Slim and 2manydjs on La Terraza along with favourites Joris Voorn, Jem Haynes, Jason Bye and Ian C. There’s a triumphant return for Aphex Twin to the Discoteca after a performance last year already firmly in the annals of Ibiza folklore. Closing out his 10th season in Ibiza will be James Zabiela joined by Technasia, jozif and DJ Rephlex.

Expect big carefree vibes with Rock Nights on the Sunset Terrace with Rob Da Bank, Colin Peters and Andy Carroll. Once the sun goes down it’s After Dark with a special audio-visual showcase featuring DJ Cheeba, Soundcrash DJs and Mr Doris. Tirk Records are back for a final soiree in El Salon with Homoelectric’s Jamie Bull, Ben Terry and Matty J. As is becoming tradition, Clive Henry is on board in the Red Box for the closing along with Alex Arnout, Coley, Ryan O’Gorman and Scott Martin. Taking things to the break of dawn (and probably beyond) on the Green Valley Terrace is Alfredo, Ian Blevins, Jamie ‘Fatneck’ and Jon Howell.

Facebook event page here.

Take a look at the video from last year’s closing party for a taster of what to expect.

We Love… Rock Nights

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Growing from the origins as a small, chic party to give locals a place to hang out and let loose in winter in Ibiza to a rolling behemoth of an institution with the obligatory Ibiza billboards and high profile summer residency. Rock Nights have brought a dress-to-kill attitude to afternoon sessions monthly on the Sunset Terrace at We Love Space. Resident DJ Colin Peters has been holding it down with guests such as Casette Jam and Mystery Jets. The first week had a rock circus theme and next up is surf n’ roll. If a picture can speak a thousand words, check out this video for an opus…

Last Night A DJ Saved My Life

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Last Night a DJ Saved My Life Foundation is celebrating receiving it’s official charitable status, by partnering with We Love Space to raise money from clubbers on the guest list tomorrow and at the closing party. The money raised will go towards the Ibiza Preservation fund which is supporting the development of the Ibiza Limpia project. This looks to introduce and support seasonal beach cleaning gatherings, using volunteers and supported by local residents and businesses, coupled with community events. The project is roughly three years old, running to date solely because of the time and energies of volunteers. The message behind this project should be relevant for all visitors to the island. Leave no trace…

So if you’re coming down to the club on either July 31st or September 25th there will be a compulsory donation of €5 if you’re on the guest list, and extra donations much appreciated. As well as being a fantastic tourist attraction, Ibiza’s spectacular environment represents an enormous responsibility for local authorities, who need to keep everything as tidy as possible throughout the year. However, with limited government budgets for keeping the island in good order, it is essential that the local population, and wherever possible the tourist visitors, lend a hand in this vitally important task. Thank you for your kind help and consideration.
