It’s A Fine Line – A Mix from We Love Space

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Ivan Smagghe & Tim Paris made a rare appearance under their It’s A Fine Line guise at We Love Space on September 4th. We’ve cut a cheeky bootleg hour and a half from that set. It’s dark, alluring and uplifting in true Smagghe style, give it a listen below. There’s no tracklist because they’re mysterious like that. Download here.

Mr Doris Autumn Mixes

Monday, November 21st, 2011

As Autumn rolls into winter Mr Doris is presenting two mixes from either ends of his broad spectrum. As the ‘Hardest Working Man in Dance Music’™ he’s got an ample collection of old and new and stretches it in both directions here.

First up is a guest selection for the NuNorthern Soul stable. It’s nice to see (and lovely to hear) Doris’ take on how his beloved nu-jazz / world funk genres are moving into indie and folk territory lately with all the lush instrumentals and subtle vocals that entails. So expect the likes of Megan Washington, Fink and maybe just a little from Curtis ‘The Mozart of Soul’ Mayfield to round things off. As NuNorthern Soul padrone Phat Phil’s tentative food analogy goes “…something fresh and not mass produced main stream junk food, this boy is straight up grade A connoisseur business, the Mac and cheese, the real tasty stuff…”

From the uber-chill to the spills ‘n thrills now with his mix straight from the club. Alongside his turntablist buddy Mo’Funk they brought a 6 deck, 2 laptop, multiple FX machine and a shed load of vinyl session to the Sunset Terrace complimenting the insanity of Aphex and Fatboy in the main rooms at the We Love Space closing fiesta. This is only part 1 of 3 from the 6 hour set which lasted until some time past dawn, so keep an eye out for the sequels in coming weeks.

Mr Doris is about to embark on a winter (or is that summer?) tour of Australia, you can check his schedule at the Nu Northern Soul site, here. Meanwhile, shake your hips to this…

Playground Weekender Announce First Round of Acts

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

The end of the year must be nigh when we start looking towards events of 2012. Australia’s favourite festival Playground Weekender has released it’s first round of acts and a sneak preview of the year’s visual identity…

playground-weekender-2012

It looks like a good basis for a knees up in the riverside resort on the outskirts of Sydney with plenty of electronic representation from the likes of Modeselektor and The Orb. It’s by no means an obvious Aussie festival lineup, with some forward thinking bookings on the chilled shoegaze end of the spectrum with Ariel Pink and local favourites Seekae. Choice thing going so far though… Greg Wilson‘s disco delights in the sunshine, only 4 months to go!

Tickets, info, etc, here.

Carl Craig & Paul Woolford in the Boiler Room

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

The fast growing phenomenon of boilerroom.tv is welcoming two of our own this Wednesday November 16th in the form of Carlito and Wooly. This Detroit meets Leeds by way of Dewsbury alliance has made waves both across the atlantic in Carl’s home town where he welcomed Paul early in the year and in our room of doom, Space’s discoteca way back in June for their Planet E showcase.

It’s hard to put your finger on why the Boiler Room works so well as a format. The combination of desirable guests, rare sets (Thom Yorke!), simplicity of concept (essentially two turntables and a webcam) and creation of scarcity through an invite only audience admission policy goes some way to making this essential viewing for a generation who’ve grown up without Top Of The Pops (Sir Jimmy RIP).

So save the date, and check out Planet E’s inimitable terremoto press agent on twitter if you’re hunting for an invite. Joining Carl and Paul will be muso rockers Friendly Fires and master of the low slung after-hours Axel Boman. Check out the video below from our 20 Years of Planet E vinyl only showcase from earlier this summer.

Jem Haynes & Ian Blevins present Second Line

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Collectively Jem Haynes and Ian Blevins DJ’d for well over 100 hours at Space this Summer. Each is a weekly resident for We Love and in one form or another they have played in all six of Space’s rooms. A high pedigree by anyone’s standards. Although the pair have been friends for a long time, it is only in the last 6 months that they have started working together. Their Second Line project as it stands is production partnership with a live show well on it’s way. Their first EP released on Jem’s own Colour Series label takes inspiration from the sounds and feelings of a New Orleans Second Line; think dance-floor orientated house music with a jazz twist.

Big Chief – Jem Haynes + Ian Blevins present Second Line by SecondLine

Over the summer the pair spent most of their time locked in their Ibiza town studio or testing out their fledgling productions on the crowds at Space . Big Chief and B Flat proved to be hits in both the Discoteca and Terrace alike and the Balearic tinge they have given to Radiohead’s Codex worked perfectly in the smaller rooms.

Jem and Ian are gigging separately throughout the summer around the world but the premier performance as Second Line is taking place at a We Love… event in London early next year. More to follow on that news shortly ;-) For more info on Second Line check out their Facebook, Sound Cloud and record label.

We Love The Warehouse Project

Friday, September 30th, 2011

After a few years absence from the Manchester party circuit we are very pleased to be back at The Warehouse Project hosting something of an Ibiza closing party. For this special event we have invited some of our favourite acts from this Summer’s Space residents and guests.

Now in his tenth year as a We Love… resident, technical maestro James Zabiela headlines the event. Joining him is the true godfather of techno Derrick May. Nic Fanciuli makes a welcome return to the We Love fold and is joined by Ralph Lawson’s full live band 2020Soundsystem. Next up we have Geddes and newly initiated We Love resident jozif. Completing the line up Jem Haynes and Mat Playford bring the sounds of the Space Discoteca and Terrace respectively to the Picadilly car park.

Tickets here.

That Old Chestnut – Bicep

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Recent balearic visitors and purveyors of all things analogue-house Bicep are heading North to the fair city of Newcastle on Octboer 1st for upstart night That Old Chestnut. Accompanying them will be our own Ian Blevins and a motley assortment of other local residents.

For this instalment the night will be housed in The Kitchen, the second room of underground club The Den. In search of intimacy they are opening only that room and strictly limiting tickets to 150 so don’t sleep on this one. It’s a small, perfectly proportioned and atmospheric space with the decks sitting on an old chest freezer – promising to be a unique night indeed.

There’s a facebook event thingamajig here.

We Love Boat Party – The Thames, London

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Prior to our summer closing party on September 24th at our London home Ministry of Sound, there’s a river bound excursion involving a couple of We Love residents. It’s probably impossible to find a more suitable duo to fare the river waters… Tickets are available here for the very reasonable price of twenty English pounds, including entry into Ministry of Sound afterwards.

WILLARD: “I was being ferried down the coast in a Navy PBR, a type of plastic patrol boat, pretty common sight on the rivers. They said it was a good way to pick up information without drawing lot of attention. That was OK, I needed the air and the time. Only problem was I wouldn’t be alone.”

RADIO: “PBR Streetgang, this is Almighty, over… This is Almighty, standing by, over. This is Almighty, how do you copy, over…”

Jamie Fatneck will also be making a waterway appearance.

Ian Blevins – Production Mix

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Since securing his place as one of the most most valued members of the eclectic set in Ibiza, young Blevins continues apace with his production work now at the forefront of his mind. The mix below consists of a blend between his own material and collaborations, including his New Orleans inspired project with fellow We Love resident Jem Haynes the double-entendre inducing, Second Line. Check out more from Ian Blevins on Soundcloud.
