Heritage by Alfredo & Jaime Fiorito

Monday, November 28th, 2011

A son who has learned how to smile from his father.

Heritage is a collaborative project bringing together two generations and more than a lifetime of musical discoveries. The father and son duo is a quintessentially Ibiza story, tracking the evolution of the sound and spirit of the island. ‘El padre’ Alfredo, purveyor of what has come to be known as the Balearic sound, and ‘el hijo’ Jaime Fiorito who through the addition of his knowledge and passion has delivered an ever changing style and vision over the years. Alfie’s prestige needs no introduction and is something of a high-priest when it comes to dance music globally.

Alfredo has been moved around like a precious chess piece between Space’s 6 rooms in recent years at We Love. He’s finally found a home where he can stretch his balearic muscles on the Premier Etage, the sun-kissed roof terrace. It’s been something of a revelation seeing a master at work, leaving no one in doubt that DJing as a true craft, selection, reading a crowd – can not be learned over-night. Jaime is no slouch either and a true multilingual child of the island. An accomplished DJ in his own right, he acts as something of a filter for his father who is all too aware there is too much music around these days! Together they bring an archetypal summer vibe to the roof, which is unique for We Love, in Space and on Ibiza as a whole.

There’s always a question of context in appreciating someone’s art. Music perhaps is easier than most forms to admire without a need for a back story, but with this mix you can’t help remember the significance it contains. Alfredo arguably kick-started the modern culture of dance music in Ibiza, and it’s good to see it quite literally moving through generations. As one veteran Ibiza promoter happily exclaimed to a questioning young resident as Alfredo made a contentious beat match, “if it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t all have jobs!” Amen. dub Magazine

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

The throwaway free mag scene is hugely over-populated in Ibiza with a higher advertorial to article ratio than a Sunday Mail supplement. There is one publication opposing the trend of flunky journalism and that is dub curated by our own in-house photographer Phrank and his partner in crime Andreas Simon. You’ll find insight beyond the usual night life sycophancy with a healthy dose of cynicism thrown in for good measure.

It’s by no means pompous however, and also serves as an outlet for Phrank’s photography work which stretches far outside his bread and butter made in the confines of the island’s superclubs.

A favourite section among the Ibiza locals is dub’s own version of the standard society pages. This painstakingly produced collage of movers, shakers, visitors and taste makers is inspected as soon as the magazine hits the streets to see which of the island’s scenesters have made the grade that month. You can be haughtily assured that most if not all of the team at We Love, from PR staff to resident DJs have appeared here on occasion

Alongside the lavish photography, editor Andreas Simon ensures a philosophical and inclusive outlook to the interviews, articles and poetry which makes up the bulk of the publication’s content. Every article (except the poetry) is published in English and Spanish with subjects chosen to capture a range of island life and opinion. You’ll find interviews with everyone from visiting superstars such as Derrick May and Ricardo Villalobos to uniquely Ibicenco socialite characters. Alongside this, Andreas’ own editorials are always on point and pull no punches with subjects ranging from music and drugs to critiques of the (mis)management of the island’s largest institutions.

The magazine survives on sponsorship from local businesses and promotors (the likes of We Love and Cocoon being long-term supporters). Ibiza is a unique territory in terms of publishing with a readership looking for specific insider information on everything from a party calendar to cheap eats. There are countless rags doing just that, but dub stands alone in offering alternatives, and on an island sometimes accused of being homogenous and inward looking – this can only be a good thing.

dub is published monthly with a circulation of 20,000 in Ibiza and selected outlets Europe-wide throughout summer. It’s fast becoming a collectors item and fortunately for those not visiting or dwelling in Ibiza they have an online presence where you can download in PDF format. The last two editions are here and here (right click and save as).

Last Night A DJ Saved My Live – Charity Update

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Conventional club-land wisdom (if there is such a thing) states that promotors are greedy, DJs are venal and everyone is looking for something for nothing. We Love looked to buck this perception by supporting registered charity Last Night A DJ Saved My Life with a compulsory €5 donation from everyone attending on our substantial guestlist. A total of €6,720 was raised across two nights, July 31st and the closing party on September 25th. Our multilingual girl on the door reported no objections to the nominal fee and people were only too happy to contribute. There were plenty patrons and supporters of the cause in attendance including Fatboy Slim, Alfredo and the Tirk Records crew.

The money raised is being used to develop and support Ibiza Limpia, whose objective is to actively engage the island’s people in keeping the beaches, forests, roads and recreation areas clean. With these funds, Ibiza Limpia will be able to increase it’s cleaning operations and recycling workshops throughout the winter and keep a high public profile which is essential for an awareness project such as this. An example of a planned incentive is distributing beach ashtrays to remind local authorities of the ease of avoiding cigarette laden sands at very little cost and effort.

We all know the various reasons from hedonism to relaxation that people flock to Ibiza every year for. With every action having it’s equal and opposite reaction, tourism can cause stress and pressure on an inherently fragile island environment. Balancing the needs of the island’s 100,000 or so local residents and the desires of its 2 million yearly tourists is no easy task. Hopefully, Last Night A DJ Saved My Life can breach the divide between clubs profiting greatly from Ibiza’s phenomenal growth and the protection of the island they love.

DJ Cheeba – Why Do You Hate Mashed Potato?

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

On Sunday September 25th, Mr Doris will be welcoming his broken beat brethren to his After Dark project on the Sunset Terrace. Joining him will be audio/visual trailblazer DJ Cheeba – check out his latest ‘video mix. As wonderful as an extended piece of video art can be, on balance the video below sums up his aesthetic and doctrine* much more sussinctly and as if by providence contains audio of Cheeba’s own mix of fellow closing party star Aphex Twin and his song Children Talking.

*DJ Cheeba does not condone the use of mashed potato in sandwiches.

We Love Vitalik – Summer 2011 Compilation by jozif & Ryan O’Gorman

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Way back in June (yes, so long ago) we started to let loose the 10,000 copies of this year’s annual compilation into the wild streets, bars, cars, apartments and villas these one-off musical souvenirs now call home. The We Love CD has become something of a collectable item over the past few years by the policy of giving something back to the people who make We Love what it is, you party starters, instigators and all round obliging, open minded crowd which are the essence of our party.

Be bear aware

Past labels who have contributed to the cause include Lawler’s Viva and Lawson’s 2020Vision but this time we chose to take on a less established but highly dynamic label Vitalik with a unique concept of a compilation consisting of entirely unreleased material. Unreleased is not to say unknown though, you’ll find plenty of We Love stalwarts from across the musical spectrum we create at Space, including The Mole, Appleblim and Martin Buttrich. There’s even a super limited vinyl release of these very three artists which you might just find in your local record emporium if you are quick enough. In all likelihood, you haven’t managed to get your hands on and ears round the physical version of the compilation, so we’ve handily put it up on mixcloud for your listening pleasure. There’s also the ever necessary DJ sympathetic unmixed version available from beatport et al.

We Love… Vitalik by We Love Space on Mixcloud

The mix itself was crafted by label boss / creepy uncle Ryan O’Gorman and We Love resident / wayward nephew jozif. Expect sultry grooves, colossal bass and an overall undercurrent of deep, driving house. The mix has been found to work with varying but always positive degrees of success on speedboat soundsystems, through underwater swimming pool speakers as well as through an iPod as you make your way back from these balearic climes to wherever it is you call home. Jozif’s debut as resident this year has been full of vigor yet always with that glassy sheen the terrace warm up needs – come see his last set of the summer this Sunday, September 25th.

Check the video below to understand the label’s place in shaping a musical landscape in Ibiza. Follow Vitalik on twitter.

El Harvo – Future Boogie

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

There’s a late addition to the Tirk/Pool hosted El Salon for the closing party on Sunday September 25th. El Harvo aka Dave Harvey aka one third of the Future Boogie collective will be joining Ben Terry, Matty J and Jamie Bull of Manchester party Homoelectric to the most à-la-mode back room in Ibiza. This summer, Tirk and the Pool have brought a diverse selection of artists to Space, from the Trojan Soundsystem of Earl Gateshead to the Italo horror disco of Bottin. In the true spirit of We Love, expect a disregard for a rigid music policy – but with dancing a priority – disco-sleaze, trashy-funk, foreign pop and good people.

Check out this suitably titled summer mix below from El Harvo himself…

PBR Streetgang – Free Track Download & Summer Mix

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

As music lovers from Yorkshire who have a penchant for the Space terrace and all things balearic, you’d be hard pushed to find two lads who personify We Love Space through the summer of 2011 more than the PBR Streetgang. Ever affable but always on point, they’ve decided to give away a mix comprising completely of their own tracks and remixes. With any less talented duo this may seem a tall order, but rest assured this one will play well at home, in your car, or more suitably through your iPod on the flight from Leeds/Bradford airport to Ibiza this Sunday September 18th where the boys will be joined by the likes of Groove Armada, Tensnake and Ralph Lawson on la Terraza, tickets (for the club not the plane) here.

As if that weren’t enough, being the re-edit masters (before it was hip) they are, they’ve made an exclusive edit just for us which you can stream/download below. Jump aboard the boogie boat which is, the PBR Streetgang.

We Love Francesco Tristano & Carl Craig

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

We’re never shy of taking a risk here at We Love, bringing a concert pianist and a grand piano into one of the world’s temples of dance music could certainly be considered so. It’s never entirely surprising when two avant-garde musicians come together from across musical divides, but in Ibiza it’s not so commonplace.

Take one part Detroit techno legend, add a bit of Juilliard trained classical protegé, a piano imported from Valencia and a few thousand cosmopolitan clubbers in Ibiza and check out the results below. Carl Craig and Francesco Tristano will be joined this Sunday September 18th in the Discoteca by our Kompakt brethren Ewan Pearson and Michael Meyer, check the event page for full lineup, TICKETS HERE.

We Love… Rock Nights

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Growing from the origins as a small, chic party to give locals a place to hang out and let loose in winter in Ibiza to a rolling behemoth of an institution with the obligatory Ibiza billboards and high profile summer residency. Rock Nights have brought a dress-to-kill attitude to afternoon sessions monthly on the Sunset Terrace at We Love Space. Resident DJ Colin Peters has been holding it down with guests such as Casette Jam and Mystery Jets. The first week had a rock circus theme and next up is surf n’ roll. If a picture can speak a thousand words, check out this video for an opus…
